TYPHOON 125 STARTING PROBLEMS

I recently bought my first scooter, a new Piaggio Typhoon XR 125.
Initially, when warm it tended to stall at idle when I went for a
ride. The Piaggio manual indicated that I could 'dial up' the idling
mixture, so I turned the knurled screw on the side of the carb about a
quarter turn clockwise. This seemed to cure the stalling. However, if
I started the bike and left at idle for a few minutes and then
switched off and then pushed the scoot down my ramp from the garden to
the street the engine failed to start. I removed the the spark plug
which looked fouled and oily. I replaced with a new plug. Started no
problem, idled a few minutes, then switched off and pushed to street
again and failed to start - fouled plug again. Dealer contacted and
they collected, but they could find no problem after replacing the
plug yet again and returning carb to factory settings.

This sequence of events has been repeated and the dealer advice is not
to idle the bike but push to the street and ride immediately, which
I've done. The bike seems reluctant to start after I've ridden a few
miles to the shops but starts at maybe the fourth attempt on the
electric start. Any guidance is appreciated as I'm reluctant to
venture far from home at the moment.

If it's fouling plugs that quickly, you should check your idle
jet....maybe try a smaller jet. Ask the dealer if he's tried changing
jets. Odds are he hasn't. If he says he HAS, ask him what size jets
you have in your carb. If he can't tell you, he probably hasn't tried
changing them. But it sounds as if your idle jet is a little on large
size. Even if the 'factory setting' says one thing, each engine is a
little different. A smaller jet (try 2-3 sizes smaller) might do the
trick.

sounds like the plug is loading up ...is the oil mixture too rich does it
smoke more at idle? I'm not familiar with the bike but mixture would be a
place to look.

I too was having a problem with the 125 Typhoon, it got to the stage that I
ended up using 8 plugs in one week. At first as long as I changed the plug
( not even for a new one at the begging ) the engine would start and act as
normal, but it could and would just stop working at anytime. I have found
that when I changed the HT coil the problem has gone away. Reading between
the lines in the Haines Man, the 125 seems to have a coil problem, ask your
dealer about this.
