Well I bought a cheap Chinese scooter because I need one sort of for a
test run. I wanted to see if I like it enough to want to keep it and
see if it would in fact save me money, and it did. I save about as
much as I spent for the bike and I was thinking about something like
this

what do you think?

I've only bought new. And from my time in California I'd be concerned
about a 12 year old machine that only got 200 miles a year (how often did
they change the oil in that machine...). OTOH, now that I'm in Michigan,
I've only had the Dung Beetle out twice this year, and that racked up
around 60 miles (of course, since I'm also retired, I don't have a job
commute adding up miles) -- so I'm probably behind on the oil change by age
(but not by mileage). The Dung Beetle service counter tick down from 3750
miles, so a 6000 mile machine should have been serviced twice if it has a
similar schedule.

I will admit that if I had to replace the Dung Beetle, I'd be looking
for a West Michigan dealer carrying
https://www.suzukimotorcycles.com.au/range/road/scooter/burgman-650/features
(though that price is twice what the Dung Beetle ran in 2006, though $3000
for an added 250CC over
https://www.suzukimotorcycles.com.au/range/road/scooter/burgman-400/features
would be justifiable I think)

Honda seems to have discontinued the SilverWing or it would have been a
contender. Aprilia has dropped the Scarabeo (even if I had an inkling for
the sports body style that replaced the 2006 touring bike)

The Burgman is the only "maxi-scooter" still in production, it seems.

Well the place that is selling the bike also has a repair shop and
they said that the bike has been fully serviced, which would mean
filters, hoses, brakes, lube, oil, stuff like that.

I did have a closer look at it and one side was scraped, so I guess it
has been laid down once or more. Do you think that would have an
impact on the quality of the bike?

But how many times has it been serviced? Did they replace 12 year old
oil, or was it only 4 year old oil? I'll probably take the Dung Beetle in
just before winter, even though the service counter will have over 1000
miles to go.

Only you can decide. One question would be if it went down at speed, or
was just slowly dropped when someone got unbalanced getting on/off (the
Burgman is a rather low feet forward design, and one might not have ideal
leverage to keep it upright if it starts tilting). If this was the US, I'd
see in Edmund / Blue Book had a listing for it, and suggestions for
estimating condition.

The Dung Beetle has been on its side four of five times -- never at
more than a walking speed -- and it has a fairly upright seating position.
First time was when I was making a right-hand u-turn to get to the
post-office drop box, and some idiot riding an adult bicycle on the
sidewalk, going against the direction of traffic, and without lights, cut
me off in the middle of the turn. Try keeping a bike upright when you've
just locked the brakes in a very tight low-speed turn (class teaches to
always straighten before stopping, but that would have required me to drive
over the idiot).
