Honda reflex starting problems

Hello once again...This is a weird question I know, but I am new to the
whole scooter thing, so sorry if this is a waste of time...My Honda Reflex,
is having some sort of trouble starting...Now I put the key on, kickstand
up, hold brake in and sometimes nothing...It will take up to 5 minutes of
just clicking the start button or fiddling with the key...I can't figure
out what's going on....The light is coming on, horn blows & signal works as
well ....And when I hit the start the light does goes out for that breif
moment I have my thumb on it...Anyone have any ideas?? Or is something
simple I am just overlooking? Sorry again, I know this is a stupid thing
but maybe one day I can laugh at this and give some other newbie advice

there are switches just behind the brake levers and kickstand. look for
em- theyre tiny and hidden, but theyre there. they should be clean and
fully extended out when the levers are pulled and the kickstand is down.
thats the "safeguard" that allows the scooter to start. if one or all
are gummed up and not fully extending itll trick the scooter into
thinking the brakes ARENT pulled, or the sidestand is STILL down.

id undo the battery leads, clean the leads and post, take the voltage
(over 12.3v!) and make sure it isnt the battery thats flaky.

*if its a 2002 and the original battery, its likely shot.*

the tiny batteries just dont last much longer than 3 years on a scooter,
even if you do everything you can to maintain them. ive had walmart
batteries last as little as a year :(

i got my burgman 400 in 2003, and the battery is still original. i know
its on borrowed time, though.

Try mnaking sure you are squeezing the brake levers enough. Sometimes I
don't and have the same problems.

Take a day and go through the scoot and disconnect and clean all the
contacts. Check your fuses, battery connections switch connections ect.
A bad ground is the second most common problem with electrics....after
a bum battery.

It's not the battery
It's not the contacts
It's the switch on the left brake.
You have to pull it ALL THE WAY IN.
It is very easy to NOT pull it all the way in.

Many on the ***@yahoogroups.com and
***@yahoogroups.com websites use this method to
start their reflexes:
1. Red Kill switch in run position.
2. Side stand up.
3. Key On.
4. Start button pushed.
5. Left brake lever squeezed until starter motor starts.

Steps 1 through 4 are interchangeable. It's step #5 that is critical.

Heck man,clean the switches and you might as well go to a Scooter store
or a Motorcycle store and buy a good battery charger that they might
reccomend.

Thanks all for the kind advice, I really appreciate it. I gave it a little
tune up as best I could. I knew it already had a brand new battery as that
was the first thing I did...As phreadbarnz said, it was not squeezing the
brake hard enough.....Mighty odd I thought, as i had never remembered
having to squeeze it that hard to start her up before...But, I just went
out squeezed for all it was worth and it cranked right up....tried same
thing off and on over the next few days and have had no problems since...I
thank all of you once again

might wanna squirt the switch with some contact cleaner, make sure it
isnt getting gummed up.

Yeah,but LQQK.Those old kick start Motor Scooters, (and Motorcycles)
they each had their own style and engine sounds.You could tell one from
another a mile away,sort of like those Automobiles of the 1950's.Even at
night time,you could tell which car was which by their tail lights going
down the road.

Of course those old kick start two wheelers would work you half to death
trying to get them started if they weren't in good shape.The big old
kick start Motorcycles,you literally had to stand up on those kick
starters.

Yeah. I ride everyday to work. I ride on the weekends for pleasure. I
ride to do errands.

I also leave part (or all) of posts so that when I reply people know what
I'm talking about.

So, does it start with the kickstand down? If yes then most likely it's
a faulty safety switch, usually located on the brake lever bracket. Those
are pretty flimsy and fail regularly; most people just open them up and
twist the wires together to bypass the switch.
